Regarding the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, I keep coming back to this New York Times Vows column on her 2007 marriage to Mark Kelly, a naval officer and astronaut. I know there’s been plenty of (righteous) criticism of the focus on Giffords’ husband, and mocking Vows is like shooting fish in a barrel.
Still, when you are introduced to someone — and the tragedy this weekend seems to be how many people met Gabby Giffords — you should find them at their best. That’s what you find in this portrait of two driven, high-achieving people finding a happy partnership. It’s also a reminder of Saturday’s horror, and a measure of what the gunman was trying to destroy. God and neurosurgery willing, I hope Giffords will emerge from the hospital healthy and whole enough to continue her life and work with the same verve she apparently brought to all pursuits.
